INTRODUCTION
Welcome to another Revo article! This article will revolve around Mid-match cards. As the reversal section has already been covered in the first article HERE, we will only be zooming in at some useful maneuvers and antics. In general, each deck warrants a different backlash build. Superstars with big handsizes or strong draw power can opt for a backlash with less red and more yellow/antic while certain superstars like Terry Funk and Jack Swagger cards interact with Mid-match maneuvers as well. Therefore, there is no 1 standard build for Mid-match. Instead, you can consider packing some of these cards. Similar to the previous article on general Pre-match, I will just mention the various uses and maybe some tactics or superstars that use those cards more often. Before we get to the main topic, here’s another Q&A.
Q: Cores are 1D to 7D, Means are 8 D to 14D, Colossals are 15D and greater. If I were to reduce a maneuver with 8 D to 7D, would it still be a mean or will it fall into the Core range?
A: No, altering a damage of a card does not mean it will change its trait. Unless a card like A Bloody Nightmare specifically turns a Core into Mean, the traits will remain regardless of damage alterations.
Without further ado, let’s get it on!
MANEUVERS
0F Core maneuvers
These can be found in R3. Basically, they act as back-up for superstars that have trouble getting their first maneuver through or have ran out of maneuvers to play from hand. Players can also use these maneuvers to achieve the requirements for some Ring Psychology cards. Each of them requires you to have lower Fort and when successfully played, you have to overturn 3. That is still a smaller price as compared to 6 cards from the aggression rule.
Do note that the 'overturn 3' is the effect. Therefore, it will only take place when it is successfully played. Also, Terry Funk's Pre-match can combo with just 1 of the above card and he can save the slots in his entire arsenal for other maneuvers instead of squeezing in 0Fs.
Mean maneuvers
These cards can be found in R1 and R2. Basically, they each have carry a benefit for your opponent or a cost for you when successfully played. Unless there is a good reason to pack them such as Terry Funk who can re-use Mid-match maneuvers or if your ability revolves around certain types like William Regal’s ability revolving around assault and hold, there isn’t much purpose in packing these cards. Once again, these cards may act as a ready source for you if you are in need of a certain type or target to fulfill your Ring Psychology requirements. That said, other cards in this list are probably more useful as compared to these cards.
Colossal with Follow-ups
These cards can be found in R2. Basically, they are the easier mid-match colossals to play as compared to the next category. Each card possesses a simple yet strong effect such as blanking his ability next turn, discarding all his antics (those pesky defense cards), or skipping your opponent’s turn (this does not cause aggression rule to take place). For tactics or decks like Test that revolve around colossals, packing 1 or 2 of these maneuvers and having ready access to them could help you in times of need or to catch your opponent off-guard. Jack Swagger’s Antic can also make one of this maneuvers gain the momentum trait. It is also possible to lure out colossal reversals from your opponent and hit them with another more effective one during your next turn.
Colossal maneuvers
These cards can be found in R3. They are the most difficult maneuvers in the game to pull off, requiring the user to have a certain number of targets in the ring before they are playable. However, they do possess very strong effects. Each card possesses 2 effects. 1 part of the effect benefits you, such as searching your arsenal for cards, or putting cards from your ringside to hand. The other part causes disruption to your opponent such as removing cards from your opponent’s arsenal to their ringside or moving cards from your opponent’s ring to ringside. I would only suggest either Kurt Angle or Jack Swagger to attempt packing and playing these cards though. Kurt Angle will have an easier time meeting the requirements due to his Pre-match which contains 1 of each target. Jack Swagger also has a Pre-match that ignores the requirements of these cards AND each of them also gains a +1 Mid-match slot. Tribute To The Troops can also help a player to satisfy these requirements as well.
ANTICS
In general, Antics are extremely hard to reverse in early game as the lowest non-superstar specific antic would cost 7F (Hail To The Chairman (HTTC) is 3F but has requirement). Another card to look out for, although hardly used, is Nobody Messes With The McMahons (NMWTM) (4F reversal for Mid-match Antics). Therefore, it is generally safe to play antics when it is your first card (Talk Is Cheap (TIC) reverses antics if it’s the 2nd card) and if your opponent has 6F or below.
Take It, And Like It
Momentum is the hardest to reverse in the game, be it Revo or AA as it is different from ‘cannot be reversed’. By granting your next maneuver momentum, it is almost certain that it is successful. As of this writing, there is only 1 non-superstar specific momentum reversal that can be played from hand but it cost 15F (Inertia). However, I wouldn’t bet on him having this card, especially if you are running cards that grant your maneuvers momentum (8F7D core maneuvers or 5F1D Antic hybrids). Similar to how classic decks only pack 1 or 2 Sidewalk Slam TB, it is safe to say momentum will face little resistance in Revo. A good superstar to use this card would be Storyline Rey Mysterio who focuses his maneuver Cores. It is possible to chain off a series of momentums. Play this card and make your next card one of the 8F7D Cores that grant momentum, followed by another maneuver that the Core grants Momentum to. Since you are running cores, your fortitude will most likely be behind your opponent most of the time.
It All Led To This
This card is very good for decks that base their tactics on a single target. Much like Take It, And Like It, this card is able to grant Momentum, which is very difficult to reverse. The additional 10D would also make a big difference for you and your opponent. A good tactic to run this card with is Ring Psychology Arm, which adds up the damage of your Arm maneuvers by the number of Arms in your ring. Therefore, the Arm maneuver that you play after this card would be extremely painful. As mentioned in the Ring Psychology article, Arm maneuvers can deal a whole lot of damage as the game progresses. Superhold (18F19D Arm colossal) can deal as much as 54D. When played after this card, there is only 1 way your opponent could survive if he doesn’t reverse it and that would only happen if he played I’ve Trained For This All My Life (Pre-match that lets you recover 4).
Layla: WWE Diva To The Core
This card acts an alternative to packing the 0F maneuvers in your backlash. As this card has a requirement for you to be lower Fort, you shouldn’t need to be afraid of NMWTM. This card is extremely useful when used with Gone-Not Forgotten (Pre-match that puts any unsuccessful card under your arsenal). When your 0F maneuver is reversed by his card, it goes to the bottom of your arsenal. Play this card next turn and you will be able to pick up the same 0F maneuver that was reversed in the previous turn. This card also works well with superstars that can pick up Means and Colossals from their Ringside. Superstars like CM Punk and Kofi Kingston fits the bill as they can use their ability to retrieve the Means and Colossals they have discarded. An alternate use of this card would be to let your opponent go first (Play Your Chance In Limelight), let him gain initial Fort, and use this card on the next turn to retrieve 1 Scissors Hold from your arsenal. With that 1 Scissors Hold that can be retrieved from your ringside over and over again, you can save up the slots for other Means or Colossal.
Grab The Tights
There are no cards that reverse ‘overturn’ effects as of this writing. Therefore, this card is very dangerous, especially for superstars that base their tactics on all having many targets in their ring like Kane and Umaga. However, the best superstar to use this card would be Kurt Angle as his Pre-match contains all 6 targets. This means that Grab The Tights will instantly force your opponent to overturn 18 cards. The only draw backs are that this card is a follow-up and you need to be lower Fort.
Maryse’s French Finish
Similar to Grab The Tights, this card could be a good way to end off your opponent. I would suggest using this card only when you are certain you would win or if you can afford to eat the aggression rule. This is because Two For The Show can cause you to end your turn if it is overturned. Although Two For The Show can’t reverse the overturning effect, it ends your turn and if Maryse is your first card played and you have not attempted to play a maneuver, you will have to eat the aggression rule. Therefore, only use this card when you are certain that it is THE card to end off your opponent. This card is recommended for any tactic or superstars that is able to pump up their hand. If you are able to discard 5 cards, your opponent will have to eat 15 irreversible damage.
That said, the discarding is done before the card is successfully played. Therefore, there is a possibility that your opponent might reverse this card after you finish discarding.
CONCLUSION
In general, there are not many non-reversal Mid-match cards to choose from. Coupled with the fact that you can only pack 6, the choice of cards that you pack is crucial to your victory. Pick the cards that you feel would benefit you in the game or simply to fill the gaps that you find in your arsenal. Like I said, there is no 1 build for backlash. There is no point packing a sea of red in your arsenal when you can only play up to 3 Mid-match. As usual, if there are any queries or comments, feel free to leave them in the comment section below and I will address them next week. Stay tuned for next week’s article as we will start moving into the Arsenal category!
Till then, happy Revolutionizing!
