INTRODUCTION
Welcome to yet another revo article! Here’s wishing all readers a Happy Lunar New Year! May the year of the Monkey bring you all the good luck and fortune!
Last week, we took a closer look at the 1st reversal style and it’s disadvantages and advantages. Hopefully it was informative enough to convince you that it ain’t all that bad to use them. Today, let’s take it up a notch. We will be looking at the 3rd reversal style. As of this writing, this reversal style has yet to make its debut in tournaments due to various obvious reasons. So my objective today is to sell you the idea that you could possibly try this reversal style out. By all means, they are only my opinion but I hope it would at least open up a possibility that you would use them. Here goes!
WEAKNESS
There are 2 main weakness / problems that arise from running this style of reversals. Firstly, the cost to play the reversals are high. Although they cover both Means and Colossals and only at 3F, they come at a high price. Discarding 3 cards and removing Fort form your ring might not be the best especially if you are lacking behind your opponent. I guess the game designers realised the ‘lousiness’ of the 3rd reversal style and therefore tried to come up with this support card for them.
By playing this Pre-match, it helps to remove those pesky effects on the reversals and you will get a very cheap Mean and Colossal reversal. As of this writing, the only Mean arsenal reversal is Try To Get Away at 4F. Therefore this is extremely cheap and accessible. However, the cost of it would be that you will not be able to pack any ‘Defense’ cards which are almighty in Revo. That is the main turn-off I suppose since most players would prefer to pack ‘Defense’ cards over other reversals. Another disadvantage of the card is that it doesn’t cover a wide range. Whilst ‘Defense’ cards are cover 2 targets each, they can be used to reverse more than just Throws, Holds and Assaults. The 3rd reversal style on the other hand only reverses one type at a time. All in all, they do not seem like the best reversals to pack even though they cost less, but cover a smaller range.
WAYS TO CAPITALISE
However, I think everyone just went along with the idea that running the 3rd reversal style would mean you MUST play the Pre-match. This is where I come in. We know what the style is lacking in and what they can cover, so just like fitting a jigsaw piece into your puzzle, you just need to find who, or how to use them correctly. Here are 2 methods with superstar recommendations that will stand to GAIN from playing those reversals without having to play the Pre-match, which means you will be packing them with you ‘Defense’ cards!
1. Recurring / Sponging
Since this reversal style is cheap, sponge tactics are very suitable. As of this writing, there are no Revo cards that ‘Cannot be reversed from arsenal’ or are Multis. Therefore, you can be sure that 1 overturned reversal would be enough to stop your opponent’s maneuver. 1 good tactic would be RP:Chest. Whilst the reversals that you recur will get stuck at the bottom, there are ways to shuffle the arsenal. 1 straightforward method would be to run Daniel Bryan or pack his Corner and use his Goat-Faced Grappler to enable shuffling every turn. Another method would be to pack maneuvers that allow you to search your arsenal. These maneuvers are covered in my older articles but basically every maneuver would enable you to search for something from your arsenal, allowing you to shuffle your arsenal in the process. With that in place, you can be sure that your reversal is well mixed in your arsenal. There are also certain Cores in the game that allows recovery. By running Hardcore Hell, you are almost certain that you can recover those reversals back.
Another advantage if you are going the sponge route would be that you wouldn’t need to activate the effects of the reversals on overturn. Unlike cards like You Telegraphed It or Overexposure where it is a requirement to be overturned to reverse, the 3 reversal’s text are not considered requirements. Therefore, overturning them would be free and cheap since you do not need to activate their effects in order to use them. This means you can save your 1 precious Pre-match slot instead of packing Good Luck With That, plus you can still pack your ‘Defense’ cards!
Superstar Recommendations:
Tactic Recommendations: RP: Chest, Daniel Bryan Is In My Corner, Recurring Cores
2. Require lesser Fort / No need for Hand
This tactic is more unorthodox and far-fetched, but I have my reasons for putting them out here. Firstly, we look at costs of using the reversals. Discarding 3 to reverse a Mean and remove at least 3D from your ring to reverse Colossals. Both effects look bad on first sight. But there are actually certain decks out there that will fit this 2 effects perfectly. Ric Flair (non-storyline) is a more obvious choice. With his ability to constantly pick up certain maneuvers from his ringside per turn at no cost, the reversals are actually helping him to recycle his maneuvers. Imagine this. Ric Flair plays Rapid Fire Punch and ends turn. Opponent plays Clothesline which Ric Flair reverses with Instinctive Reflexes. Removes Rapid Fire Punches from his ring to ringside. Ric Flair proceeds to use his ability to pick up Rapid Fire Punches to use again. With his recurring style and possibly Ladder In The Ring to draw back hand in case of reversing Means, Ric Flair can keep himself afloat with these reversals without having to pack the Pre-match or losing the ‘Defense’ cards. Another superstar that would benefit from this would be Randy Orton with his storyline. When he has lower Fort, it is possible for him to pluck Fort from his opponent’s ring as well. When you are forced to remove Fort from your Ring, it also helps you to reduce your Fort. Therefore, tactics that are dependent on lower Forts like Hardcore Hell, Shock The World and It Has Everything To Do With Me would benefit from it.
With regards to the discarding of 3, they shouldn’t be much of a problem if you are packing maneuvers that can be retrieved from ringside. Since you will be lowering your fortitude as well, Scissors Hold is 1 good example of a maneuver that can be retrieved constantly from ringside. Cards like Double Leg Lock Crab and Snap Bulldogs are other cards that can be easily retrieved.
Superstar Recommendations:
Tactic Recommendations: Hardcore Hell, certain Antics and reversals, maneuvers retrievable from ringside
CONCLUSION
With that, we have come to the end of yet another Deeper Dive. Hopefully you will see the 3rd reversal style in a new light. They are indeed very tricky to play around with and will definitely require a lot of work. But if you are able to turn the weaknesses into an opportunity and capitalise on them, you are sure to succeed in pulling this off. As usual, if you have any queries or comments, feel free to leave them in the comment section below and we will look into them in the next article.
Till next time, Happy Lunar New Year and thanks for reading!
